On Thursday we had the privilege of having Stephen Daniel come in and talk to us about Youtube. Growing up, I was an avid consumer of content on Youtube and I have seen how it has changed as I have gotten older, so this lecture was particularly interesting. I particularly enjoyed the video that he showed about the history of Youtube the varieties of content that it has. This really made me think about the effect that this website has had on my life. It has music videos and covers that have nurtured my love for music and helped me with practicing my own music. It has advice and diy videos that help anything from my math homework to coming out. One other thing that he touched on that I found interesting was Youtube’s algorithm. I am very familiar with the tagline of “like, comment, and subscribe” but that is now something that Youtube factors in less. It is now a focus on how long a user watches a video, which can completely change which types of content are shown first in the algorithm.
