Facebook Analysis

For my Facebook analysis I chose three different small businesses and saw how they used this platform to promote their products.

  • Miss Jenny’s Pickles

  • Cross Platform Presence

  • Miss Jenny’s Pickles does a great job of promoting their small business across platforms. They post a few of the same posts across social media to create a semi-consistent feed, but they have their own posts and reposts on Twitter and Instagram to keep followers on each platform interested and engaged.

  • Things they do well

  • They share stories and posts from real people that eat their product, which humanizes their social media. It is important to do this because when social media is run without interacting with real people it can feel very sterile and robotic.

  • They utilize hashtags for events they attend, for example they used #SheFlewTheCoop for an event the owner spoke at. By using these hashtags they allow customers and vendors at these events to find them on social media and make vital connections.

  • They tag people and places when they visit them, which allows for people to look at a location (like Salem Kitchen for example) and see who was there and when they will be back again.

  • Things they should work on

  • They often post memes that look grainy (because they have been screenshotted and reposted so many times), this can detract from their overall professional look.

  • They do a pretty okay job of posting good pictures, but about a quarter of their pictures look like they just clicked a picture and posted it immediately, without giving any thought to the picture quality.

  • They often post personal posts, like prayer requests, which I think should belong on personal, not professional accounts.

  • Little Black Dressing

  • Cross Platform Presence

  • This company actually does not have a cross platform presence, since it seems they are without an Instagram or a Twitter. However, I believe they could benefit from both, especially instagram since salads tend to be especially photogenic and full of great colors.

  • Things they do well

  • They do a great job of reposting other peoples posts, this is like someone leaving a review, but it comes from a real person that you can click on and see, so it adds a sense of people authentically loving their product.

  • This Facebook page does a great job reposting from stores when they have a sale on their product.

  • They have video that they posted that shows the behind the scenes and story of their product. This has an extremely professional feeling to it and goes to show, just because they are a small family run business doesn't mean that they can’t compete with larger companies.

  • Things they could work on

  • They have many blurry and bland pictures. With a product like salad dressing it is important to have vivid pictures of fresh looking salads in order to draw in buyers.

  • They share posts from the shows and festivals that they attend, however these posts do not always seem to be pertinent to their product. It could help tie these posts in if they added a caption like “So excited for this food show! We will be at the booth at the very front and we hope to see you there!”

  • They occasionally use all caps to emphasize a point. This is more of a personal preference, but I found it distracting from the actual content.

  • Elizabeth's Pecan Products

  • Cross Platform Promotion

  • This small business possesses both a Facebook and Twitter, however they exist completely separate from each other. It would be helpful if they had a link to each other on each page or even shared a post on twitter or a tweet on facebook, in order to initiate cross platform interaction.

  • What they do right

  • They share features that they have in magazines.

  • They share a few videos that go behind the scenes of how they harvest their pecans and turn them into food products.

  • The best thing I saw on their social media was a contest to get to 500 likes and and once they reach that goal they will randomly pick someone to receive some of their products delivered to them. This encourages people to share the page and do advertising for the business.

  • Things they could work on

  • One glaring thing they need to work on is updating their social media consistently. Their last Facebook post was in 2015, however their twitter was updated in February, so they are still active as a business.

  • They also need to work on tagging people and places in order for people to find them easier and add more interest to their posts.

  • They should use hashtags when they attend events, like the Southern Christmas Show in Charlotte, so that people that attend the show can find their page.
